DC’s latest live-action, Clayface, has reportedly cast another star. Emmy award-winner Max Minghella (The Handmaid’s Tale) is in talks to swap Gilead for the mean streets of Gotham. The contracts aren’t yet signed, so it’s not yet official, but it’s rumored that Minghella will be stepping into the role of Detective John.
Star Wars’ Naomi Ackie has already been cast as his fiancé, Caitlin Bates. This is an original character created for the show, with no link to Killer Frost, despite the similar name. Tom Rhys Harries nabbed the title role.
During DC’s comic run, there have been many Clayfaces, but this version will be Matt Hagan. In print, Hagan popped up in the dark multiverse as well as several different versions of Earth. But producers James Gunn and Peter Safran have said that they want this movie to be an original, so don’t expect a high adherence to canon.
DC is taking a chance with relatively unknown British horror director James Watkins. He’s got a short filmography, but most will know him for Daniel Radcliffe’s The Woman in Black; however, Eden Lake and Speak No Evil also made waves. He also directed the Black Mirror episode, ‘Shut Up and Dance’, one of the most unsettling in the series. With James Watkins at the helm, Clayface is going to be an atmospheric frightfest.
Clayface is due to hit cinemas on September 11th, 2026.
