Lone Starr: I wonder, will we ever see each other again?
Yogurt: Who knows? God willing, we'll all meet again in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.
- Spaceballs (1987)
Forty years after the premiere of Mel Brooks’ hit screwball comedy and Star Wars spoof, Spaceballs, the “Schwartz” will awaken. The comedic genius, Mel Brooks, has officially announced, after years of idle discussions and rumors, including a June 2024 announcement of Mel Brooks and Josh Gad teaming up for a sequel, that there will be…another. Brooks also did a television series follow-up series on Hulu to his hit film, History of the World, Part 1 (1981), with History of the World, Part 2, in 2023, also featuring Brooks and Gad, as well as a bevy of well-known actors. As for the new Spaceballs film, Brooks’ social media accounts posted a Star Wars-style crawl listing all of the sequels released in all of the major franchises in the last (nearly) forty years, as well as a brief announcement about the film and an image of Dark Helmet’s damaged mask.
So far, details are scant, and the film does not have a formal title, but there has been some news about production and casting. Actor Josh Gad (Frozen, Frozen 2) will both star in and co-write the film with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum. Mel Brooks will take a backseat as producer of this film. Some of the confirmed cast members include returning actors Bill Pullman (Prince Lonestarr), Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa), Rick Moranis (Dark Helmet), and Mel Brooks, who will reprise his dual roles as Yogurt and Spaceball President Skroob.

Lewis Pullman, Bill’s son, and Keke Palmer are also in discussion to star in the film in as yet-unknown roles. Regrettably, in the years since the original film’s release, actors John Candy (Barf) and Joan Crawford (Dot Matrix) have passed away. It is not known at this time whether their characters might be recast or written out for the sequel. With the release of several additional Star Wars films(nine with one more on the way in 2026), as well as several television series since Spaceballs was released in 1987, there should be plenty of material for the writers to mine for comedic relief. The sequel is currently slated for a 2027 theatrical release. Stay tuned for more details.
