In 1990, a superhero team tackled environmental issues of the world in an animated series named Captain Planet and the Planeteers. Running for six seasons, the series saw superhero Captain Planet join five teenagers who cared for the environment as they tackled real issues that the world faced. Now, a live-action adaptation of that series is being developed for Netflix.
Originally a movie that was being developed at Paramount Pictures in 2016 with Appian Way, the project failed to get started, with the rights returning to Warner Bros. Discovery. Leonardo DiCaprio’s production company is still on board for this next attempt at getting a live-action adaptation off the ground. Alongside Greg Berlanti’s production company Berlanti Productions.
Tara Hernandez, co-creator of Peacock’s Mrs. Davis, is set to write the adaptation. The executive producers for the series will be DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson of Appian Way, Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman of Berlanti Productions. It is said that Jono Matt will be one of the producers for the series.
The two production companies working on this adaptation of Captain Planet and the Planeteers are well-suited for the job at hand. Berlanti Productions produced the DC universe for The CW, while Appian Way have produced many environmental-themed documentaries.
