One of the most interesting parts of the Assassin’s Creed series is exploring various places and time periods. Ancient Egypt, the Golden Age of Piracy, Feudal Japan, the American Revolution, Ancient Greece, and on and on and on. It’s always fascinating to see the times and places that we don’t usually experience brought to life. When an Assassin’s Creed TV show was announced, the big question was where and when Netflix would set its new show. It appears that the series will be set in Ancient Rome, during the time of Emperor Nero.

Assassin’s Creed has gone to Rome before, as the highly underrated Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood was set in Renaissance Rome, but Ancient Rome has been untouched by the series as of yet. The richness of the setting means that there are countless fascinating stories that can be told, so the showrunners couldn’t have picked a better sandbox. So far, there is no indication of a release date for the series, but filming is expected to begin in Italy sometime next year.
