Star Wars is probably one of the most globally recognized names, and with a fandom just as big to accompany it, making a Star Wars film is likely a daunting task to undertake. Strong-willed directors need only apply.
Recently, Shawn Levy, who is directing the Star Wars film Starfighter, sat down to talk on the podcast, On Film with Kevin McCarthy, about the process and how the film is progressing, as well as how stressful it is to be filming a Star Wars movie.
In the interview, he revealed that he has completely reworked the 3rd act of the movie. Levy says, “There was something unexpected on Starfighter. It was, we had a whole different idea for something in the third act and then things didn’t align and I was forced to come up with a new idea. And I’m literally right now shooting that section of the movie."
Part of this is likely due to the film being a completely new and original story within the Star Wars universe. Levy explained that the film is not set during an era that’s been done before, and it’s not a prequel nor a sequel and there are no legacy characters. This would indicate that it’s perhaps set after The Rise of Skywalker, where there hasn’t really been any ground tread, but none of that is confirmed. Basically, it seems a fresh new take on the Star Wars galaxy, and perhaps just what some of the fans have been clamoring for.

Those fans can be pretty brutal, if you’ve ever spent some time on internet Star Wars communities. One of their targets, Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm, simply told Levy to, “Make it original. You pick the writer. You pick the story. Just make it feel like a Shawn Levy movie. Make it warm-hearted and fun and built for audience delight.”
Surely that can feel like a relief of some of the burden, especially since Levy stated that in the first few weeks of shooting, he felt this kind of oppressive stress weighing him down. There were tons of questions daily, as he was checked in on. He doesn’t want it to feel derivative or copied from something else. He seems to be working extra hard to make it an original Star Wars story.
Starfighter premieres in theaters on May 28, 2027.
