Shawn Levy’s Star Wars project, Starfighter, is an upcoming standalone film set in the New Republic era of the galaxy. It is the second film on the slate for Lucasfilm, following the 2026 release of The Mandalorian and GroguStarfighter (2027) will take place about five years after the events of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019). Not only do we know when, but also how this project fits into the wider Star Wars universe. In an interview with Collider, Levy discussed where his movie will fit.

Levy described what makes his film stand out, "Well, for one thing, it is different in that it is an all-new non-sequel, non-prequel adventure. It's new characters, it's a new timeline.” He explained how its themes connect to other Star Wars content while keeping itself unique, “It inherits legacy themes, but it's really trying to give Star Wars [fans] — and just movie audiences — something fresh, something new. And with a spirit of play and big-hearted adventure with moments of real levity that, frankly, A New Hope had in a revolutionary way."

Lucasfilm has been reportedly adamant that Levy “[do] something new.” There is a lack of pressure to adhere to pre-established lore and live up to what has been produced in the past. The creator continued, “There's no pressure to be derivative or limited by an obligation to what came before. There's just a love of what came before.”

Star Wars: Starfighter is currently slated for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027. It will be a standalone story; while it may feature known characters to the universe, the film will have its own character and plot focus. The cast includes Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Matt Smith, Amy Adams, Simon Bird, Flynn Gray, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings.
