Star Wars showed love to its fans on May the 4th in several ways, including a tribute video “celebrating the greatest fans in the galaxy” that honored every major Star Wars master-apprentice relationship, including Din Djarin and Grogu. As a way of promoting the film’s upcoming release later this month, the video illustrated the parallels between the bond shared by the Mandalorian duo and Jedi Master and Padawans, including Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Rey Skywalker and Luke Skywalker, and Luke and Obi-Wan. The video also included clips of a young Jyn Erso being comforted by Galen Erso, and clips of Master Yoda and Luke in the sequel trilogy.

The video highlights Grogu’s transition from a foundling to Djarin’s adopted son, who has grown to a full-fledged Mandalorian apprentice. Djarin is shown telling Grogu that “the old protect the young, and then the young protect the old”, a line featured heavily in most of the teasers and trailers from the movie. This seems to hint that Grogu’s responsibilities will grow in the movie, as will he, in strength and fighting prowess. Comparing Din and Grogu’s relationship to most well-known Master and Padawans in Star Wars is a nice touch and elevates Din’s status from more than a bounty hunter to someone whose mentorship will have a lifelong impact on Grogu. Currently, the film’s director, Jon Favreau, leading man Pedro Pascal, and Sigourney Weaver are on a press tour that has taken them to Madrid, Berlin, and Paris. Next stop, the trio will make their presence felt in London. Reactions from the 25-minute IMAX screenings on Star Wars Day have been positive overall, with fans appreciating the fast-paced action scenes, scale, and music from Ludwig Göransson. The Mandalorian and Grogu will hit theaters on May 22.
