Far Cry, the first-person shooter from publisher and developer Ubisoft, looks to be the next gaming franchise to make the leap from gaming TV to scripted TV.
Rob Mac, from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Mythic Quest, and Noah Hawley, creator of Alien: Earth, are teaming up to bring the franchise to TV. Rob Mac worked with Ubisoft on Mythic Quest where he played a video game developer, and this is likely the result of that working relationship.
Hawley talked about how the game franchise is well known for working with a different theme and locale in each iteration. For example, Far Cry 5 was set in a version of Montana where a doomsday cult has taken root and possession of the county, and Far Cry 6 took place on a fictional Caribbean island called Yara, ruled by a dictator.
He went on to tell IGN that, “to create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true. I’m excited to partner with Rob and bring our shared irreverent, ambitious sensibility to the screen.”
It looks clear that they plan to follow a similar sort of playbook as the games, and since they will be working with FX, which aired It’s Always Sunny, and streaming on Hulu, it would also be similar to American Horror Story, which had a different theme each season. There’s no word on the release date or cast, nor what the setting and theme are going to be, but the games have traversed the globe, so it’s anyone’s game.
