After eight years, Wile E. Coyote is finally getting his day in court. On August 28, he will take legal action against Acme, seeking justice for the countless mishaps caused by the company’s dangerously unreliable products. Ketchup Entertainment, which acquired the film’s distribution rights in 2025, has now released a teaser for Coyote vs. Acme.
Well, strictly speaking, it’s more of an announcement teaser for the full trailer, set to drop on April 22. In the roughly one-minute video, Will Forte - who plays Kevin Avery, Wile’s lawyer - promises that the upcoming trailer will “blow the roof off the whole Acme conspiracy,” while insisting he has nothing to do with the over-the-top antics that are typical of a Coyote vs. Road Runner cartoon.
Coyote vs. Acme is based on a 1990 The New Yorker article by Ian Frazier. The concept was first pitched to Warner Bros. in 2015 by James Gunn, with development officially beginning in August 2018. Blending live-action and animation, Dave Green was brought on as director in December 2019- only to be halted shortly afterward by the pandemic.
Several key members of the original team, including producer Chris McKay and screenwriters Jon and Josh Silberman, either left the project or transitioned into different roles during production.
Filming eventually took place between March and May 2022. The film was initially scheduled for a theatrical release on July 21, 2023, but was quietly removed from the calendar in April 2022.

In November 2023, Warner Bros. revealed that the completed film would not be released. Instead, the studio planned to use it as part of a roughly $300 million tax write-off, following similar decisions involving Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Hunt. This move - made without informing most of the cast and crew - sparked a widespread backlash from both audiences and industry professionals. Under pressure, Warner Bros. reversed course and attempted to sell the film to other studios, including Amazon MGM, Paramount, Sony, and Apple. However, when no buyer agreed to meet the reported $75–90 million asking price, the studio reverted to shelving the project.
Following a “funeral screening” of the completed film, which received strong praise from everyone who had seen it, Ketchup Entertainment acquired the distribution rights for approximately $50 million.
In addition to Forte, the film stars John Cena as Acme’s lawyer, Luis Guzmán as the judge presiding over the case, and a range of animated characters from the Looney Tunes universe.
