It’s been 18 months since we last received a major update on the KOTOR remake. In April 2024, Saber Interactive’s CEO, Matthew Karch, stated that the game was “alive and well,” but it will most likely still take several years until its release.
Originally announced in September 2021 with a cinematic trailer, the game was intended to be developed by Aspyr Media, the company that had previously ported the original Knights of the Old Republic I and II to modern consoles.
In July 2022, Bloomberg reported that development of the game had been halted indefinitely until Saber Interactive took over the project.
While we may never learn what the Asypr version of the game might have looked like, a bunch of early development screenshots have now surfaced. They stem from an artist who worked at Aspyr until 2022, so it seems that they were created not too long before development was abandoned.
Most of the images focus on props and weapons, offering only subtle clues, yet they hint at the impressive level of detail Aspyr aimed to bring to the remake. And they all look very “Star Wars-y”.

According to the artist, the props and weapons were intended for the introductory levels of the game, and one image shows that at least some of the weapons were modular and intended to be customizable by the player.
Perhaps the most intriguing image reveals an early character prototype. Clad in armor and gripping a Vibrosword from the original game, the figure stands in a stark, textureless world. Debug buttons line the top of the image, a familiar sight in the early phases of game development for testing movement and weapon mechanics.

At the bottom right, two icons are showing Mission Vao, a female Twi’lek who was introduced in the original Knights of the Old Republic game. It seems that these buttons were intended to activate a companion mode.
No one knows how much of Aspyr’s work, if any, will find new life under Saber Interactive. For now, fans can only wonder if the props and weapons glimpsed in these images will make it into the final game.
