As streaming companies look to increase profits, many are implementing changes, including Prime Video. Prime Video is a popular streaming app as many customers already have an Amazon account that offers free shipping and includes the streaming service. Starting on January 29, 2024, Prime Video will put ads on their base tier. However, customers can pay an extra $2.99 per month to retain ad-free streaming. Amazon also runs a free ad-sponsored streaming platform called Freevee, and those ads will remain in place even for customers paying for the higher tier of Prime Video.

The company sent out an email to their customers detailing the new changes. The message read in part,

“We are writing to you today about an upcoming change to your Prime Video experience. Starting January 29, Prime Video movies and TV shows will include limited advertisements. This will allow us to continue investing in compelling content and keep increasing that investment over a long period of time. We aim to have meaningfully fewer ads than linear TV and other streaming TV providers. No action is required from you, and there is no change to the current price of your Prime membership. We will also offer a new ad-free option for an additional $2.99 per month.”

Prime Video is home to originals like The BoysRings of Power, Reacher, and Invincible and includes blockbuster hits such as Air, Creed III, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and Candy Cane Lane.
