In the grand tradition of Star Wars film re-releases, the latest Star Wars film to be re-released in theaters, Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, is doing major business at the box office. The final film in the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, originally released in 2005, has so far soared to 3.4 million dollars in Thursday evening previews, edging out Ben Affleck’s action-thriller sequel, The Accountant 2, which has earned 2.5 million dollars so far, also accounting for its Tax Day screenings this year.

The last Star Wars film re-release, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace, originally released in 1999, earned 8.7 million dollars last May.  Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi, which enjoyed an anniversary re-release in 2023, earned 5.1 million dollars in April 2023. However, it should be noted that neither of those films enjoyed preview screenings. The 1997 Special Edition re-release of the “original” Star Wars film, Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, however, is the current crownholder when it comes to Star Wars film re-releases, having earned 35.9 million dollars (not adjusted for inflation).

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith concluded the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, which chronicled the twilight of the Jedi Order and the rise of Palpatine’s Galactic Empire. Revenge of the Sith specifically featured the conclusion of the Clone Wars, which began at the end of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones and was further chronicled in The Clone Wars animated series. The film also featured the long-awaited final transition of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker to the fearsome Sith Lord Darth Vader, the establishment of the Galactic Empire, and the births of future heroes of the Rebellion, Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.

At the time of its release in 2005, the film was considered one of the darkest entries in the nine-film Skywalker Saga, earning the first PG-13 rating ever for a Star Wars film. The film has garnered mixed reviews over the years but is still regarded well overall by critics, currently sitting at 79% on the Tomatometer and 66% on the Popcornmeter. Author Matthew Stover’s novelization of the film is also considered one of the best Star Wars film novelizations to date, and it will be getting a deluxe annotated re-release as well on October 14, 2025. The new edition is already available for pre-order on Amazon.com.
