Star Wars: The Last Jedi filmmaker Rian Johnson interviews with Louis Chilton. Despite the mixed reception to Johnson’s film, he said it was a positive experience for him. He explained, “I mean, you talk about wars between Star Wars fans… We experienced our own. That [the prequels] was World War I, and this [The Last Jedi] was World War II.” He continued, “I feel like I've had such a wonderful, lovely, positive experience with the fans during the course of it. That's left me a bigger Star Wars fan than I ever was, which is really something, because I grew up with it as the bedrock of my childhood.” Although some fans objected to Johnson’s transformation of Luke Skywalker from a heroic Jedi to a jaded hero, the filmmaker wouldn’t hesitate to jump back into the sci-fi saga.
Since the film, Johnson has been working in the murder mystery genre with movies like Knives Out, along with its two sequels and the television series Poker Face. Johnson said, “I kind of went down the murder mystery rabbit hole—I’m focused on making other stuff. But that wouldn’t rule out it happening down the line. If I get back in the Star Wars universe someday, I’d be the happiest person.” The future of the Star Wars franchise seems set for now with The Mandalorian & Grogu, Star Wars: Starfighter, and a new trilogy. So Johnson’s potential return to the galaxy far, far away won’t be for a long while.
