At GalaxyCon Columbus, a few weeks ago, Rosario Dawson talked about how Ahsoka Tano’s original voice, Ashley Eckstein, influenced her portrayal of Tano in live-action. Rosario has appeared as Ahsoka in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka. Dawson and her co-stars wrapped up the filming of Season 2 in October, and she believes that her version of Ahsoka is slowly but surely closing in on Eckstein’s portrayal of the character. Dawson says she had to play a mature, adult version of Tano, compared to the version we see of her in animation. The Star Wars Rebels version of Ahsoka is a bit closer to the person she is in live-action, but still far off. It is during Rebels that Ahsoka learns the full extent of the damage the dark side had done to her former Master, Anakin Skywalker. Later on, after she faced off against Darth Vader and nearly died, she further changed and became the subdued and serious Ahsoka from The Mandalorian.
Rosario explains, “I think there was a play at first of me trying to match that in The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, but then that didn’t really make a lot of sense, especially for where she was. I like that Ashley shifted from The Clone Wars to Rebels, and I kind of wanted to feel that shift with my performance.” However, she says, “in the second season, is that Ahsoka has gotten a little lighter, because Ashley – if and when you meet her – is a Disney Princess… It was nice to think about her tenor and her energy and her pacing, and you know, her calm in the moments where she kind of loses it, but the physicality with the stunt training was when I felt closest to the character.”

While there are differences between Rosario and Ashley Eckstein’s performances as Ahsoka, Dawson says, “I definitely like the moments – there was one scene that we did on the second season, and Dave came up to me afterwards and was like ‘Yo, I felt like I was watching the animation.'” Perhaps the second season is where Rosario’s performance as Ahsoka will finally begin to move closer to Eckstein, and Ahsoka will rediscover the younger, lighter, and more optimistic version of herself from The Clone Wars. Rosario will be seen as Ahsoka again in Season 2, which premieres later this year on Disney+.
