Looney Tunes’ classic mouse character, Speedy Gonzales, will be getting his own film courtesy of Warner Bros. The film, featuring “the fastest mouse of all Mexico,” is currently being developed for Warner Brothers by Jorge R. Gutierrez.

The iconic mouse character first debuted in the 1950s and his 1955 Merrie Melodies short won an Oscar for best animated short film. Aside from his appearances in Looney Tunes cartoons, Speedy Gonzales appeared alongside Daffy Duck and other Looney Tunes characters in Daffy Duck’s Movie: Fantastic Island (1983) and, most recently, Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021). This is the second attempt to make a film featuring the character as an earlier effort was scrapped a decade ago, reportedly due to having been viewed as “politically incorrect” as studio brass.

Plot details have not been shared yet, and a writer has not yet been announced, but the film seems to be in good hands with Gutierrez. Gutierrez, originally born in Tijuana, Mexico, is well-known as an animator, writer, producer, director, and voice actor. His credits include co-creating the Emmy-winning Nickelodeon series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Riviera (2007-2008) and the Emmy-winning Netflix series Maya and the Three (2021). His feature directorial credits include The Book of Life (2014). Stay tuned for further updates.
