The 90s were all about Mulder and Scully’s quest to find the truth in The X-Files, and Ryan Coogler is currently hard at work on a reboot of the trend-setting science fiction series. The creator of Black Panther, Creed, and Sinners has already done work that has appealed to the masses, but The X-Files poses what’s likely the biggest challenge of his career. The show has already created a strong impression on the audience and produced two of the most iconic lead characters of the television era, and their chemistry is still talked about to this day. In an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Coogler opened up about the current status of the reboot. The director revealed that he fully intends to stick close to the show’s original format, which included a “Monster of the Week” episode that worked along with the series' overarching conspiracy. He says, "I mean, it wouldn't be X-Files if we didn't do both. We intend on having both Monsters of the Week and the overarching conspiracy. But that's what I'm doing now.”

The X-Files began as Fox Mulder’s search to uncover the truth about what happened to his sister, Samantha, which led him to the FBI. Mulder and his partner, Dana Scully, became embroiled in a larger government conspiracy, and the stakes grew bigger with every season. However, the original 9 installments of the series had over 20 episodes per season, while a majority of TV series on streaming platforms nowadays have no more than 8 to 12 episodes per season. It will be interesting to see if the reboot follows the original format of 20-episode long seasons or sticks to 8 to 12 episodes. As for whether he plans to have Duchovny and Anderson revive their iconic roles, Coogler has remained tight-lipped.

When asked about Anderson and Duchovny, he says, “I'm a big fan of her. I'm a big fan of David. You know what I mean? That's all I could say.” The Mulder and Scully actors have remained non-committal when asked about the reboot; however, considering that they already returned twice for the revival, it seems likely that they would come back if Coogler had substantial parts for them. For now, anyone who’s interested in the reboot can rest assured that Coogler is the right man to handle it. He says he watched The X-Files with his mom as a kid and credits it for producing a talent like Vince Gilligan, who went on to create Breaking Bad and Pluribus. For now, there’s no further information on the reboot, and Coogler hasn’t shared when he believes the series will go into production. However, casting news may be revealed next year, as Coogler says he plans to work on Black Panther 3, which is expected to be released in February 2028, after he completes work on The X-Files reboot.
