Scott Adams, the creator of the prolific Dilbert comic strip, passed away at the age of 68. Back in May 2025, he announced that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. After its launch in 1989, the satirical workplace comic soon decorated office cubicles, classroom doors, and bulletin boards until several papers pulled it from production after Adams’ controversial statements about race in 2023. While Dilbert was Adams’ claim to fame, he wrote other books, including God’s Debris, The Religion War, and How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big. After several papers refused to carry his comic, he published the strip online with the name Daily Dilbert Reborn.
Adams also started a podcast in the later years of his life, Coffee With Scott Adams. It was on this podcast that his ex-wife, Shelly Miles, announced his death to the public. She read a letter that Adams penned before he passed, “If you are reading this, things did not go well for me. I have a few things to say before I go. My body failed before my brain. I am of sound mind as I write this January 1, 2026.” The letter continued, “With your permission, I’d like to explain my life. For the first part of my life, I was focused on making myself a worthy husband and parent, as I waited to find meaning. That worked, but marriages don’t always last forever, and mine eventually ended in a highly amicable way. I’m grateful for those years and for the people I came to call my family.”

After divorcing Miles, Adams married Kristina Basham in 2022. They divorced in 2022. For many, Adams’ fame was tarnished after his controversial and increasingly political posts. Despite this, the Dilbert creator expressed gratitude for his life in his last letter. He wrote, “I had an amazing life. I gave it everything I had. If I got any benefits from my work, I’m asking that you pay it forward as best as you can. That’s the legacy I want: be useful. And please know, I loved you all to the very end.”
