If you look at the history of slasher films, one of the things that you’ll see over and over again are sequels. Lots and lots of sequels. Sometimes the original didn’t even need to do that well critically or commercially to get another entry or two. We’re seeing this play out in real time with the “killer childhood character” trend that we have going. Blood and Honey got/is getting two sequels, the atrocious Mouse Trap is already getting one, and the halfway decent David Howard Thornton killer Steamboat Willie film Screamboat is adding to the mix.
First announced one day after the iconic Disney character entered public domain and released into theaters a few months later, the film had Willie hack and slash his way through a New York ferry. The film was… decent enough, if not good. Either way, it was left open for a sequel, and that’s what we’re getting. Filming begins in 2026, and it will introduce Minnie as Willie’s partner in bloody crime. The director is promising more bloody comedy and outrageous set pieces, so we can at least expect the film to be fun. Better than the first? Only time will tell.
