Demigods rejoice! After the success and excitement of the first season of Disney+’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, fans were begging for more. It only took a little over a week since the finale of season one aired, but Disney+ announced in their quarterly earnings call that they have renewed the series for season two, which made fans breathe a sigh of relief and anticipation.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is based on the best-selling book series by Rick Riordan. Although the books did get two films adapted from them in the 2010s, they were widely viewed as not great adaptations and not true to the spirit of the books. When Riordan announced that he was teaming up with Disney+ to bring Camp Half-Blood to screen again and that he would be directly involved this time, fans held out hope that the series would actually capture the characters and the stories that so many wanted.

It did not disappoint. While there are still some differences and things that were changed the series still captured the essence of the story and the characters, literally bringing the world to life on screen, and making a much better adaptation of the beloved book series. Season one premiered with excellent views with Disney+ reporting 13.3 million worldwide over the first six days, and that number nearly doubling in the next three weeks. It also ranked in the top ten original shows on Nielsen’s streaming charts, making it the biggest launch of any Disney+ series not associated with Marvel or Star Wars

The series is set up so that each season explores one of the books. Percy Jackson and the Olympians book series has five books, so as long as Disney+ keeps renewing it, we will hopefully have five seasons. The first season of eight episodes covered the first book: Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. The story follows Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell), Annabeth Chase (Leah Sava Jeffries), and the satyr Grover Underwood (Aryan Simhadri) as they embark on a quest to find Zeus’ Master Bolt and return it to him before a war breaks out.

The second season will follow the events in Percy Jackson and The Sea of Monsters, which is basically a retelling of The Odyssey, in which we get to see many of the classic monsters like Circe and the Cyclops, while Percy, and some other demigods, search for the Golden Fleece.

Disney Branded Television President, Ayo Davis, said in the announcement: “Rich in magic, wonder, adventure and heart, Percy Jackson and the Olympians captivated the imaginations of viewers of all ages everywhere. We’re thrilled to embark on an exciting new quest and a season two with Rick Riordan, our fantastic partners at 20th Television, and the exceptional ensemble of cast and creative talent that bring this story to life.”

Riordan also added to the announcement saying: “I can’t wait to bring the next season of Percy Jackson to Disney+. Raise anchors. Hoist the mainsail. All hands on deck, demigods. We’re heading for the Sea of Monsters!”

While we still have a little while to wait, in the meantime you can rewatch the first season! Percy Jackson and the Olympians season one and A Hero’s Journey: The Making of Percy Jackson and the Olympians are streaming now on Disney+
