The pioneering animator Jane Baer sadly died on February 17th 2026. Baer’s longtime friend, Mindy Johnson broke the news that she passed away in Van Nuys, Calif at the age of 91. Baer began her long career animation in post WW2 Disney’s Silver Age, when she was hired as a production assistant on Sleeping Beauty. One of the few women to study under the legendary ‘nine old men’, Baer went on to work on The Black Cauldron and The Rescuers and Basil the Great Mouse Detective.
In 1984,(along with her husband, fellow animator, Dale Baer) she set up her own studio, which was responsible for the landmark animation sequences in Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Last Action Hero. Baer Animation grew to employ over 100 people, and worked on iconic pictures such as The Little Mermaid, Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest and The Swan Princess. But Hollywood wasn’t Baer’s only hat, she was also heavily involved in The Smurfs television show, not only as an animator, but as a story director. But Baer always kept a hand in with the House of Mouse, returning to work on Beauty and the Beast in 1991.
