In a stunning reveal, a new video game set in the Star Wars galaxy has just been announced at 2025’s The Game Awards. Entitled Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic, the game has only a CGI trailer and an interview on StarWars.com, but that alone should be enough to excite any fan, given who is involved in the project.
Casey Hudson, of Knights of the Old Republic and Mass Effect Trilogy fame, is returning to the franchise that originally helped build the reputation of his former studio, Bioware. Having co-founded Arcanaut Studios earlier in 2025, Hudson spoke with Kristin Baver of StarWars.com about the new project from the new studio, alongside Lucasfilm Games’ General Manager Douglas Reilly.
The interview discusses Hudson’s history with Star Wars, as well as Knights of the Old Republic, and does not reveal any details on plot or the world players might be stepping into, because, unfortunately, that may be many years away. Development of the game only just started, so it will likely be a long time before we get another trailer or any substantial updates.
However, we know the genre, which falls well in line with the idea that Fate of the Old Republic is a spiritual successor to KOTOR. Fate is currently planned as a narrative single-player action role-playing game, and the trailer itself includes a major link to KOTOR in the form of a downed ship being approached and then explored by a small team led by what can be presumed to be a Jedi.
We’ll have to wait and see if there is any further news in the coming weeks on what other creative minds will be joining, or have already joined, Arcanaut Studios to help create this new story.
