Stellan Skarsgård won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Sentimental Value last night. This was the actor’s second Golden Globe victory; the first was for his performance in the HBO Limited Series, Chernobyl. Skarsgård has been a vocal advocate for cinema during the Sentimental Value promotional tour and believes that theaters should always have precedence over streaming platforms, including Netflix. As a veteran actor in Hollywood, his support for cinema comes at a crucial time for the industry, following the news of Netflix nearly finalizing a purchase of Warner Bros. The Swedish actor said he’s happy because Sentimental Value was a small film that didn’t have much money for advertising. The actor emphasized the importance of the cinematic experience, which is a dying species. He said:
“Hopefully you will see it in the cinema, because they are an extinguished species now. In a cinema, where the lights go down and eventually your chair…the pulse with some other people. That is magic. Cinema should be seen in cinemas.” Skarsgård’s speech has been circulating on social media, and cinephiles have appreciated that he dedicated his winning moment to reaffirming the importance of supporting small films and continuing to watch them in theaters rather than at home. Even the actor recognizes that this is a culture that seems to be going out of style, but for now, there’s hope that the destruction of theaters can be delayed for some time longer. Skarsgård stars alongside Elle Fanning and Renate Reinsve in a film about a film director who tries to repair his strained relationship with his children. With the Golden Globe Award to his name, the actor’s chances of finally taking home his first Academy Award on March 15 have surely gone up, and this could finally be his year.
