It’s no secret that Hollywood is out of ideas. Seemingly every big movie is a remake, sequel, prequel, or superhero flick, and box office numbers are suffering. If things kept going the way they were, Hollywood would be in really big trouble. But lately, the movie industry has found a new, slightly unexpected goldmine: YouTube. In just the past year, we’ve seen the dual hits of Obsession (403 million dollar box office off of a 750 thousand dollar budget) and Backrooms (350 million box office off of a 10 million dollar budget) as well as the 36.2 million dollar box office haul of the finale for The Amazing Digital Circus and Markiplier’s Iron Lung, which pulled in 51 million off of a 3 million dollar budget. YouTube seems to be the gold mine that Hollywood has been looking for.

The next example of this is the analogue horror hit The Mandela Catalogue, which first premiered on YouTube in 2021, takes place in Mandela County, Wisconsin, which is being threatened by demonic creatures called Alternates. The rights to the series were eventually won by United Artists, Amblin, and Amazon MGM Studios. Alex Kister, the original creator of the series, will direct. Legendary director Steven Spielberg is set to be one of the producers.

We could be seeing a new age of filmmaking and filmmakers here. If Hollywood goes back to the gold mine of YouTube, and there’s no reason to suspect that they won’t if they keep getting smash hits out of low budgets, then who knows? In 2028, we could be seeing a Jeff the Killer or Russian Sleep Experiment film. It wouldn’t surprise me.
