Behind The Scenes Of The 'Supergirl' Release

Supergirl is the latest feature to experience a poor box office. According to The Hollywood Reporter, several insiders offered different reasons for the failure, but it mostly came down to competition between James Gunn at DC Studios and Supergirl director Craig Gillespie. Test screenings of the film never scored low, so the studio decided to get involved. What followed is what The Hollywood Reporter calls a bakeoff. Essentially, they showed Gillespie’s cut, then Gunn's. Test scores marginally improved with Gunn’s cut, and that was enough for the studios to choose it. Test audiences credited Gunn for pacing, song choice, and the villain, while Gillespie’s take had more time dedicated to the villain and was eleven minutes longer.
Another factor contributing to the box office failure is superhero fatigue. One reviewer called it a good but not great film in an oversaturated superhero market. One studio head recognized that the main demographic for superhero movies is millennials. Gen Z isn’t showing up for them. Gunn has a unique challenge as he is leading a studio while also dealing with the more creative side of filmmaking. DC will have more chances to get it right with the upcoming Man of Tomorrow and Clayface movies as well as a series about Mr. Terrific.
