The opening performance of Craig Gillespie’s Supergirl (2026) did not meet expectations. The film's domestic revenue totaled approximately $37.1 million, with a global revenue of around $68 million. According to Variety, the target opening revenue was around $50 million domestically, falling short of this by a considerable amount. The film had steep competition for its opening weekend, facing Pixar’s Toy Story 5 (2026) which opened a week prior and is firmly holding onto the number one spot. While the opening weekend did not perform to expectations, the film has plenty of time to bridge the revenue gap in the coming weeks. As a holiday weekend is approaching in the United States, a boost may be seen. As of July 1, 2026, the film has made about $40 million domestically and $67.71 million overall.

This initial performance does not seem to be dampening the future of James Gunn’s DCU reboot. DC Co-CEO Peter Safran commented on the outcome (via Entertainment Weekly), “While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in.” This is only the second film installment and fourth installment overall to Chapter One: Gods and Monsters of the DCU.
