Helldivers is fighting for survival out there, and doing pretty well, it seems.

In a growing field of extraction shooters, Helldivers 2 has held it’s own by providing constant updates with new missions and an ever-evolving list of maps and battlefields. Then, ARC Raiders was released, and player counts fell. They’re still fighting for attention, though, and holding on.

Now, more attention will fall on the franchise with a major update to the upcoming film adaptation of the franchise. According to Variety, Jason Momoa will be joining the cast for the Helldivers movie.

The movie is slated for release on November 10, 2027. It has Justin Lin tasked with directing the movie. He’s best known for his work with the Fast & Furious franchise. There are no other announcements of who would star alongside Momoa.

The franchise is set in a universe where Earth is ruled by a fascist government, and Earth is called Super Earth. Through blatant propaganda they promote an ongoing war against the Terminids (insectoid aliens), the Automatons (robots), and now the Illuminate (superpowered aliens). Players take on the role of a Helldiver, portrayed as an elite soldier that drops onto planets in Hellpods and accomplishes mission objectives to “spread democracy.” Managed Democracy, that is.

Video game adaptations in film are experiencing a golden age. With successful runs of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, the expanding Super Mario Bros. franchise, and several other franchises to boot, like The Minecraft Movie, in which Momoa was recently featured. If Helldivers enjoys the same success, there is likely more to come.
