James Gunn’s Superman (2025) has had a fairly successful opening weekend thus far. On its opening day, the film grossed about $56.5 million domestically. At this point, the film is projected to bring in $122-$125 million for its total opening weekend; either way, the film has surpassed the $116.6 million opening revenue of Man of Steel (2013), cementing itself as the biggest opening for the start of a Superman franchise.
David Zaslav, president and CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, commented on the film’s success and the future of the DC Universe. He explained (via Deadline), “Three years ago, I hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to reimagine and unify the creative direction of DC under one leadership team, by breathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world. James and Peter’s commitment to honoring the legacy of the DC Universe while forging something new and enthralling is inspired.”

The CEO wrapped up his comments with a bit of reflection and a look at what’s to come:
“I remember my first meeting with James three years ago…His personal bond with these DC heroes was powerful and I knew then that James was the right person to bring them to life. His love for the DC world runs deep, and it shines in every frame of his work. This weekend, we watched Superman soar as James Gunn’s passion and vision came to life on the big screen. Superman is just the first step. Over the next year alone, DC Studios will introduce the films Supergirl and Clayface in theaters and the series Lanterns on HBO Max, all part of a bold ten-year plan. The DC vision is clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn’t be more excited for what’s ahead.”
Superman (2025) is the first film in James Gunn’s reboot of the DC Universe and the second overall installment to Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. The film veers away from a direct origin story, focusing on the hero several years into his tenure and how he deals with balancing the secret identity, public opinion, and rising threats. It will remain in theaters for the time being; once the film goes digital, it will most likely be streamable from HBO Max.
