"Prediction is very difficult, especially about the future.”
Before the release of James Gunn's Superman, prognoses about the film's box office performance were all over the place. Some were expecting a global first weekend north of $300 million, others, fumed by rumors about weak pre-sales in China, expected less than $200 million.
Warner and DC announced that they anticipated a US opening weekend of $ 100 million, while Hollywood's leading tracking service set the bar a bit higher, at $130 million.
What we know for certain is that Superman made $22.5 million from Thursday previews and is standing at $55 million by Friday, which puts the film on track for $115 - 120 million by the end of Sunday.
This would put Superman in range of Gunn's previous movie, Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which opened with $ 118.2 million in 2023, but behind GotG Vol. 2, which had a first weekend of $146.5 million back in 2017.

Still, an opening weekend north of $100 million for Superman would make it only the third movie to cross this milestone in 2025, after A Minecraft Movie ($ 162.8 million) and Lilo & Stitch ($146 million).
It would also be the best premiere for a superhero movie since last summer's Deadpool and Wolverine, which opened with a massive $ 211 million, and the first DC film to cross $ 100 million since Wonder Woman in 2017, which debuted with $ 103.3 million.
For the sake of comparison, Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice had a premiere weekend of $ 166 million in 2016, and the last "solo" Superman film, Snyder's 2013 film Man of Steel, debuted to $ 166 million domestically.
Superman makes the first entry of James Gunn's and Peter Safran's DCU, which will continue with HBO's Lanterns and Supergirl, both set to debut in 2026.
