'Total War: Warhammer 40,000' Developer Roundtable Hints At What's To Come

Just a few days after first announcing their new Total War game, Creative Assembly provided further information about the title through a developer roundtable video posted on YouTube.
Hosted by Senior Community Manager Anastasija Dolgosejeva and Head of Player Engagement Joshua Williams, the roundtable was conducted with David Petry, Battle Product Owner, Ian Roxburgh, the Principal Creative Director, and Simon Mann, Lead Designer.
The discussion, on the whole, was a limited affair, repeating talking points already seen elsewhere from announcement posts and early press coverage of the initial announcement. The roundtable’s b-roll was also fairly uninteresting, with a lot of reuse of the announcement trailer footage. Yet despite the limited scope of the roundtable, there were some strong hints at what the game will be like.
Firstly, when outlining the factions, the speaker at the time mentioned how the Aeldari play very differently to the other Warhammer factions in the game, and in Total War more broadly. It seems like players will be operating from a Craftworld, however, it may be located off the map, as mention of Webway portals and sending out missions from said Craftworld might suggest a very non-traditional form of conflict. The Aeldari were correctly noted to be few in number, and it might be possible that the faction holds very little galactic territory, instead relying on infiltration and more esoteric operations to achieve their aims.

Next involves the game map. Players have wondered how the worlds on the map would be represented, and we have our answer. It appears the scale is absolutely increasing for Total War, as each world will have multiple battles to fight in a campaign to fully seize control. Depending on what territory a player seizes on the planet during the course of their campaign, certain resources will become available as they fight, and things may become more difficult or easier. But players are also fighting in a broader theatre, in planet-to-planet conflict, and seemingly perhaps some combat in space, though we would assume these may play out as boarding actions rather than anything similar to Battlefleet Gothic. Ultimately, planets are not analogous to cities on the usual Total War map, and there will be layers to the map. Some of the new concept art shown off also depicted how the planets may have a stylized depiction to help make clear what kind of planet they are from a quick glance.
Lastly, the game still seems some ways away. It may come out in 2026, but late 2026 sounds most likely as this roundtable was a final piece of publicity before the company goes on a holiday break. Additionally, they note that further news will come out later in 2026, directly in the video. Total War: Warhammer III, set in the Warhammer IP now called The Old World, has a major DLC set for the summer of next year and it would be unlikely for Creative Assembly to cannibalize their own hype train. Even so, the updates hint at what is to come, and the finer details of the interview have other smaller details of interest. We encourage fans to go and give it a watch.
