Industrial Light & Magic has a new treat for Star Wars fans this holiday season in a series of animated gingerbread shorts, starting with the Death Star trench run. This is a reimagining of a loved scene from Star Wars: A New Hope with “a delicious twist: the Death Star, Darth Vader, and the Rebel Alliance fleet of X-wings have been crafted entirely out of gingerbread cookies!” The new Star Wars Kids animated series, Star Wars Minis, will include more episodes covering moments from Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, The Mandalorian, and more, featuring beloved characters like Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker, Yoda, Din Djarin, Grogu, and the Ewoks.
The unique style of animation is just the latest of ILM’s advancements in animation technology by artists, which allows them to express their love of the saga through animation techniques used in Star Wars video games, while experimenting with new techniques. There’s also inspiration from recent Star Wars live-action series, including The Mandalorian, which is seen through an animated Razor Crest and N1 Starfighter, and a scene featuring Kuiil and Grogu. One of ILM’s principal creatives, Landis Fields, says, “We all love to spread joy and inspire people to make things and to imagine things.” Landis says he hopes that these shorts will serve as an entry point for new Star Wars fans into the galaxy far, far away, and perhaps, inspire them to enter the creative world as well. He explains, “The goal is for people to see the magic of these stories, but also to want to make a cool costume or to draw something or to do whatever it is that makes them happy.”

The team behind Star Wars minis paid extra attention to details to make the gingerbread creations feel realistic and handcrafted. A behind-the-scenes featurette will take fans inside the artists’ creative process, providing a glimpse of the shorts to come. The remaining shorts will focus on The Mandalorian and Grogu, made from yarn. Fields says he wanted the animated characters to feel small, "So whether it's a gingerbread cookie, crocheted dolls, or even the Japanese Chibi-style, they feel like something that a kid would be playing with.” There will be more Star Wars minis to come on Star Wars Kids in 2026.
