A new composer approaches Bad Robot! It’s officially been confirmed that J.J. Abrams is hiring an unexpected talent to compose the score for his upcoming film The Great Beyond. And that new talent is… HIMSELF!

Yes, you heard that right! Emmy-winning writer and director J.J. Abrams will be scoring his own movie! Abrams’ early films (Mission: Impossible III, his Star Trek films, and Super 8) were scored by Michael Giacchino, whom he had already worked with on Lost and Alias. Abrams would then collaborate with legendary film composer John Williams on his two Star Wars films; The Force Awakens and The Rise of Skywalker. J.J. is no novice when it comes to music, having co-composed the main title themes for Felicity, Lost, and Fringe. He solely wrote the main title theme for Alias. Rumors have circulated for a while that Michael Giacchino and J.J. Abrams would reunite on The Great Beyond, as the last time they worked together was on 2013’s Star Trek Into Darkness. It’s unknown why Giacchino isn’t scoring this film, though some speculate that it could be due to scheduling conflicts.

The Great Beyond is J.J. Abrams’ first film since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019 and his first original film since Super 8 in 2011. While plot details are being kept under wraps, the film is rumored to be centered on a popular fantasy author who learns that his creations are actually real. Glen Powell is set to star as the author and leads an ensemble cast consisting of Jenna Ortega, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Merritt Wever, and Samuel L. Jackson. In addition to directing and scoring, Abrams also wrote the screenplay.

The Great Beyond flies into theaters on October 1st, 2027.
