Amazon MGM Studios has found its leading man for the upcoming rom-com The Love Hypothesis. Tom Bateman will play Dr. Adam Carlsen opposite leading lady Lili Reinhart’s Olive Smith. Adam is an arrogant and tyrannical professor, while Olive is a biology PhD candidate. The movie will focus on the pair entering a fake relationship to test their theories of love. As rom-coms go, it’s clear that neither of their calculations will be 100% correct.

The casting isn’t the only link Bateman has to this film. In real life, he’s married to Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in the Star Wars sequel trilogy. According to USA Today, The Love Hypothesis began as a fanfiction called “Head Over Feet” depicting a romantic relationship between Rey and Kylo Ren. Ali Hazelwood, who penned both the original fanfiction and the reworked novel The Love Hypothesis, shared her excitement that the story spread so far. She said, “Traditional publishing is getting more and more interested in fanfiction and in embracing it. And maybe they're doing well because of money and marketing and stuff like that, but I'm just really happy that this is happening and that fanfiction is gaining legitimacy because it always had legitimacy.” The Love Hypothesis is directed by Claire Scanlon and written by Sarah Rothschild. Elizabeth Cantillon will produce the film with Reinhart, Catherine Hagedorn, and Hazelwood serving as executive producers.
