Tom Cruise is breaking a different kind of record with his stunt work in Mission: Impossible -The Final Reckoning. The action star broke a Guinness World Record for the most burning parachute jumps. The film required Cruise to leap out of a helicopter sixteen times with a parachute coated in fuel and set on fire. Editor-in-Chief of Guinness World Records Craig Glenday praised the actor’s performance. He said, “A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It’s an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.”

Cruise and the crew prepared for weeks before ascending 75,000 feet above Drakensberg, South Africa, and completing the stunt. To capture the right footage, a fifty-pound snorri camera was attached to his body.

In a behind-the-scenes featurette, Cruise explained the stunts, “If this is twisted while it’s burning, I’m going to be spinning and burnt. I have to kick out of the twist and then ignite in 10 seconds.” Cruise clarified the need to be smart and safe. He said, “We’re gonna be real smart. I’m not saying be risky. We don’t take risks… obviously.” Check out the featurette below.
