What is going on at Ubisoft?

Ubisoft has been in video game news frequently in the last year or so, and not usually in a good way.

And the hits just keep coming.

Merely a couple of weeks after announcing that their Halifax studio had been shut down, an announcement revealed a major restructuring of the company, which included the closure of another studio: Ubisoft Stockholm. Ubisoft Stockholm previously worked on Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Ubisoft Halifax was focused mostly on mobile games.

Furthermore, six titles have been completely scrapped, including the highly anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The remaining five titles were unnamed, but one was a mobile game and three were new IPs. In addition to these three cancellations, they delayed the release of seven other titles. One of these titles was supposed to launch this year in March, which many speculate to be the all but confirmed remake of Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag. It will now launch next year.

Among this news is the announcement of restructuring at their offices in Abu Dhabi, as well as the Trials studio RedLynx and Massive, which is the home of The Division. This is interesting, especially since an executive involved on The Division 3 was boasting about how much of a shift the game was going to be.

On the whole, the company is going to shift to focusing on open-world games and live-service games spread among five Creative Divisions. Division 1 will focus on their biggest titles of Assassin’s Creed, Rainbow Six, and Far Cry. Division 2 will focus on shooters, Division 3 will focus on live-service games like For Honor. Division 4 will feature “narrative-driven” and “fantasy-oriented” games. Rounding out the company will be Division 5 which will focus on “family and casual gaming.”
