After a relentless, tension-filled build-up for the past two episodes, Episode 7 “The Hateful Darkness” slows things down, not dropping that tension or intrigue, but instead setting it to a simmer as pieces move into place for the season finale next week. As a result, this episode pauses some plot threads to explore new ones built from last week’s events, but also wraps some up with a precise finality to help clear the way for what should hopefully be a focused, explosive finale.

WARNING: This review contains LIGHT spoilers for Season 2 Episode 7.

The court system returned to the fore this episode as, realizing an unstable Fisk has made a mistake by turning the public’s focus back on the Vigilante Court Trials, Karen and Matt with assistance from Kirsten McDuffie make a play to publicly shame Fisk and his actions with the Task Force. Full of cameras capturing every moment, the latest trial allows Kirsten to turn some screws in the system, while the three judges from earlier in the season look on. It is difficult to tell if any of them will crack, the camera’s focus on Chief Justice Waters earlier in the season and here again suggests she may be the lynchpin, but it may be that something else breaks before the system of “justice” established by Fisk does.

Elsewhere, other plotlines continue apace quietly. BB and Daniel’s relationship is the rockiest it has ever been, and the episode ends on a powerful note related to that difficult situation. Heather Glenn, meanwhile, continues to unravel after the events with Muse last season, with this season showing us her continued fall from well-intentioned but flawed, into poorly-intentioned and actively negative as she continues to deny what she truly needs.

All of the actors are doing excellent work with the material they’re given, and the writing of the show continues to be of an excellent quality. The turns of phrase and commentary, as well as callbacks to the past which have only continued to increase across the series, are thriving here. While religion doesn’t play as big of a role as it has in more recent episodes, it does still have a presence near the episode’s end, and features a good final moment that sets up next week very well.

The cinematography is also stunning, with one particular moment of Fisk sitting on his bed a haunting image due to the perfectly lit background and what can be seen there. Previously highlighted in a past episode, this object now casts a shadow and impacts how we see Fisk in this moment because we know what he is thinking about.

The only downside is the weight of plotlines. Certain events and characters from Episode 6 are not addressed, leaving their final fate a mystery for the finale, and while we can perhaps infer what has happened, it is not a certainty. This episode was also missing the BB report segments checking in on the social opinion of the Big Apple, for a good narrative reason, but also creating a void in understanding the city’s true feelings on recent events. Characters can say people are upset due to recent events, and last episode they showed that to some extent, but the lack of follow up or further agitation is a little odd. However, we’re certain some of these issues will be fixed in the season finale.

Overall, the second season of Daredevil: Born Again is looking like it will finish strong next week, with a solid build-up of many moving parts hopefully adding up to a satisfying finale!
