'Daredevil: Born Again' Season 2 Episode 6 Review

After the pulse-pounding finale to Episode 5, Episode 6 “Requiem” starts out with the immediate consequences of that moment, and naturally unfolds into a tense, thrilling next chapter in the season’s story. The time between the events of each episode have only gotten shorter and shorter more recently, and we’re clearly approaching a boiling point as by the end of the episode, the tension of the series has increased yet again.
Faith has played a big part in Born Again, and this episode is no different. It is interesting to witness how the faithless react to the faithful, and how faith is at once both character-driving and aesthetic dressing for events and characters who do not have the same convictions. Most obviously, we see how Matt Murdock and his faith continue to impact not just himself, but others around him, as his key choice from last episode sends ripples across his relationships. On the other hand, you have Fisk, a man who doesn’t have a strong faith yet has others around him who do, and in one case, someone offers it to him, only for it to end very badly for that person.

Wilson Fisk, in this episode, is different from every other moment we’ve seen him so far in Born Again, because for once, he is quiet. We barely see Fisk utter a word this episode, with his underlings operating on trickle-down orders we don’t see him give out. That silence makes him all the more dangerous, and also reflects on how he demands such blind, immediate obedience: with fear.
There’s a lot of that going around this episode, but emotions are high in many quarters. Elsewhere, Daniel and BB continue to have tension with Buck Cashman breathing down Daniel’s neck, and after the last episode, Daniel is more of a mix of emotions than ever. Meanwhile, Karen Page plays a not insignificant role in this episode, and we also get clear links back to events of the Netflix Daredevil series, not the first time that has happened, but some of the clearest and most consistent across one episode. Karen is angry, and driven, and when the episode ends, we wonder what her future holds with her role in the ongoing resistance to Fisk’s reign.
Turning toward other elements of the episode, the fight choreography was great, as a familiar face entered the combat fray, which required a change-up to the usual depictions of fights we’ve seen so far. It was nothing completely unexpected or out of the box, but still showed that as more figures enter the fray, the behind-the-scenes work done to make the show match both the projects of the past, and live up to the opportunities presented by the show’s narrative.
With the series coming to a close in the weeks to come, we’ll have to see what final note we end up hitting, but with great action scenes, excellent character interplay, and a focus on key elements growing across both this season and the wider series, we’re certainly excited!
