'The Super Mario Galaxy Movie' Review

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a fun, colorful romp throughout the galaxy. Mario and Luigi return, along with Toad and Peach. Most exciting, though, is the addition of everyone’s favorite dinosaur, Yoshi, and Princess Rosalina.
The movie starts with Princess Rosalina, who is currently in the process of reading to the various Lumas, whom she has adopted. Rosalina is voiced by Brie Larson, who was a perfect choice for the character, and has some of the best voice acting in the movie. Of course, this can never go as planned, and she is interrupted by Bowser Jr., who comes to collect her for his evil plan. He is also determined to get his father back, which he successfully does.
Hello, World!
I admit, they do have some cute moments together. Meanwhile, Mario and Luigi are doing their jobs, where they stumble across Yoshi for the first time. He quickly becomes a favorite among the brothers. They attend Peach’s birthday party, which is cut short when a ship falls out of the sky. The ship reveals a Luma, which informs them that Rosalina has gone missing. Peach takes it upon herself to go and save the princess. Eventually, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi all follow to try to catch up and help Peach in her mission to save Rosalina from the Bowsers.

At the end of the day, it is still a Mario movie, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have a message, which in this case, is family. The Lumas find Peach to save their mother. Bowser and Bowser Jr reunite and have an unconventional welcome back. Yoshi finds a family with the brothers, and Peach even finds her family, which she has so desperately wanted. Even though family isn’t perfect, they will always be there for you, whether that's biological or found, which is always a great message for both kids and adults.
One of my biggest issues with the movie was the pacing. Instead of being too slow, it was actually way too fast. So much was happening throughout the entire thing that the audience never got a chance to rest and take a break. I guess that’s perfect for children, especially those who don’t have a long attention span. There were also many slow-motion scenes, which worked at first but grew old after a while. The movie was extremely colorful and very nice to look at. My favorite parts included the 2D and 8-bit animations used at various points. It was a fun way to honor the original games.

They hyped up Rosalina a lot in marketing, but her screentime ended up being very little. While there was a story reason for that, it would’ve been nice to see her a bit more throughout the movie. Another issue was their release that Fox McCloud would be appearing in the movie. Don’t get me wrong, he was cool and a fun addition, but it would’ve been more exciting to have his reveal in the movie, without being told beforehand.
This movie is anything but Oscar-worthy. It is perfect, though, if you want a fun movie with classic characters that takes you on a nonstop journey throughout the galaxy. The post-credits scene also teases another familiar character joining the franchise. The movie has its issues, but if you have nostalgia for the game, then it’s worth a quick journey to the theater.
