In 2020 Disney announced that it was planning a female-led Pirates of the Caribbean spin-off with Margot Robbie at the helm. Four years later, there are no signs of a movie shoot off the port bow. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer says that Disney has changed direction, and is planning to release a complete reboot first. Jeff Nathanson (Mufasa: The Lion King, The Young Woman and the Sea) is penning a nearly completed script, according to Bruckheimer.

“He’s got an amazing third act. We just gotta clean up the first and second and then we’ll get there. But he wrote a great, great third act.”

This is not the Margot Robbie film. Despite Bruckhiemer being happy to have the former lead back, it looks like Johnny Depp won’t be returning. . It’s a risky move because unless Disney can rustle up another big name, then it will only be the Pirates of the Caribbean brand acting as the box office draw.  But Disney obviously have plans to reinvigorate this very lucrative franchise. They are still hopeful to make Margot Robbie’s movie too.

“It’s two different movies,” Bruckheimer said. “We hope to get ’em both made, and I think Disney agrees they really want to make the Margot one, too.”

Margot Robbie is hot property at the moment after her recent success as Barbie, she told Vanity Fair in 2022 that she thought that her Pirates movie would not get made. But it’s interesting what a little star power can do. If the project goes ahead, then Robbie will be reunited with writer Christina Hodson. Hodson has had a run of bad luck on her last few productions, Birds of Prey (with Robbie) and The Flash were disappointing at the box office, and Batgirl was cancelled before it ever made it to theatres. But with a reboot cleaning the slate, and a talented lead, anything can happen. Let’s see what Disney do with it.
