The fantasy genre of TV and film has been big, with the likes of Game of Thrones seeing huge success. Now, Apple TV wants to get a franchise of its own going by striking a deal with Brandon Sanderson to adapt the Cosmere books. Apple won out against many other studios, likely down to what Apple offered.

Sanderson is one of the most prolific and beloved fantasy authors of the day, selling over 50 million books worldwide across his various series. He has headlined a fantasy convention that has sold out each year it has run. And has the record for the most successful Kickstarter campaign in the platform’s history. So it should be no surprise that the amount of control Apple has given Sanderson over the adaptation. Which will include writing and producing. He will be a consultant of the universe and will have approval for everything that goes into it. Such levels of involvement are stronger than even George R.R. Martin has with his universe.

The Cosmere books depict various worlds and eras of its universe, with the underlying premise seeing conspirators killing a being known as Adolnasium, shattering his power into 16 shards that get spread across the universe by those conspirators. The power of those shards holds various kinds of magic, which are introduced into the universe. Of the books, the Mistborn trilogy will be adapted to film, with its first story centred on metal-using magicians attempting to overthrow a despotic empire. The Stormlight Archive series will be adapted to television, with its first story, The Way of Kings, introducing magical storms, magical knights, and monsters known as Voidbringers.
