The Avengers are almost here, and they have some familiar faces writing their story! It’s been confirmed that MCU veterans Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers have worked on the script for the highly anticipated Avengers: Doomsday!

During an interview with The Wrap, Destin Daniel Cretton (hot off the immense success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day) talked about the writing process for the mega hit sequel. While Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers worked on the film’s screenplay, they were replaced by Justin Kuritzkes later in production due their new commitments to Avengers: Doomsday. Despite this, McKenna and Sommers are the only credited writers on Brand New Day, but Cretton has made sure to mention the extent of Justin Kuritzkes’ involvement.

Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers are best known for their work on the acclaimed NBC sitcom Community, created by Dan Harmon. McKenna earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the episode "Remedial Chaos Theory," widely considered the best episode of the series. Community has retroactively become an old stomping ground for future MCU alumni such as directors Anthony & Joe Russo, Black Panther composer Ludwig Göransson, Lokishowrunner Michael Waldron, and Wonder Man showrunner Andrew Guest. In the realm of the MCU, McKenna and Sommers started on Spider-Man: Homecoming, co-writing the screenplay alongside initial screenwriters John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein, director Jon Watts, and his frequent collaborator Christopher Ford. The duo also co-wrote Ant-Man and the Wasp and every other Tom Holland-led Spider-Man film. They’re also known for co-writing the screenplays for The Lego Batman Movie and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. McKenna and Sommers are co-writing Avengers: Doomsday alongside Stephen McFeely and Michael Waldron, though it remains to be seen if they’ll all receive credits for their contributions. All four writers also worked on the screenplay for Avengers: Secret Wars.
