Sci-Fi movie fans might face a tough decision at the box office when choosing tickets for opening weekend, as Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part 3 are releasing on the same day. Notably, there is significant overlap in fandom between the Avengers and Dune franchises, prompting the question: if they do go head-to-head at the box office, which will come out on top?
Apparently, at a screening of Marty Supreme earlier this year, Timothée Chalamet and Robert Downey Jr. jokingly referred to the release of their respective massive projects as “Dunesday.” There has been some discussion that both films could benefit from a same-day release, citing the cinematic phenomenon seen with Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer in 2023. Notably, critics believe that “Barbenheimer” was successful because the two films are polar opposites, with Barbie being bright, pretty, and pink, in contrast to the dark historical drama Nolan presented in Oppenheimer. The difference this December is that Warner Bros. and Disney/Marvel share a fandom between these two intellectual properties, meaning the outcome could have earning consequences for one of these two films.

Another issue for Doomsday and Dune is the possibility of competing for IMAX and premium large-format screens. Historically speaking, Dune has held priority for these immersive viewing options. If history repeats and Avengers: Doomsday is forced to split the time, or worse, take a back seat to Dune: Part 3 as the priority, then Avengers: Doomsday ticket sales could be negatively impacted.
As of the date of this publication, there appears to be a studio standoff between Warner Bros. and Disney/Marvel, with both claiming they called December 18, 2026, first and neither willing to change it. Of course, this early in the year, it is possible that one studio may opt to change its date. However, if both of these powerhouse films release on the same day, we’ll just have to wait and see which one comes out on top.
