Disney Drops 'The Mandalorian And Grogu' TV Spot During Super Bowl

Final moments of the Big Game ad spot for The Mandalorian and Grogu

Many assumed that a trailer or ad spot would air for the upcoming film The Mandalorian and Grogu during the Super Bowl this past Sunday, and Disney did not disappoint in that regard. Though, the spot that aired was certainly not the kind of look at the film that many were likely expecting.

Appearing as something of a parody of other advertisements often found at the Super Bowl, or indeed airing around other big primetime events, the short 30-second-ish spot sees Din Djarin and Grogu driving a hovering cart over a snowy landscape pulled by four Tauntauns. As a series of panning, close zoom, and moving shots gradually reveal this fact to viewers, a voiceover by someone who is, or is closely mimicking, Sam Elliott (perhaps best known in recent years for his voiceover of Ram truck commercials, and roles in various Western or Western-adjacent media projects) describes the nature of tough travels and developing bonds.

The reaction to this trailer has been mixed, with opinions focusing on various aspects of the short spot. On the one hand, similar to what was stated by Lucasfilm’s marketing brand lead Ryan Stankevich, the spot reflects other similar spots seen at past “Big Games” and shows a playful side the franchise doesn’t often flex. On the other hand, Star Wars doesn’t do this kind of parody much, and the tone comes across as strange when, with three months to go, next to no information exists about what the film is actually going to focus on, let alone who the villain is.

As it stands, at current, there doesn’t appear to be a next-day true trailer materializing like some were hoping for after what some fans are counting as a disappointing showing by their favorite franchise. Yet others from outside of the usual fandom appear eager to see more of the film in the coming months, and it may be that this second category of viewer was what the spot was solely aimed at: the non-die-hards who needed to be reminded that Star Wars is coming back to the big screen in just a few months.

Regardless, the next few months will be critical to getting more information on what we’re in store for when The Mandalorian and Grogu rides into theatres on May 22nd, 2026.
