Andor has once again been confirmed as the most costly Star Wars project of all time. With a total cost of $705.5 million, the series has surpassed the price of every Star Wars series and film ever made, including every movie in the Skywalker Saga, and every Star Wars series, including The Mandalorian. According to Forbes, Disney has revealed that an additional $60.5 million was spent on Andor before the premiere of Season 2 in April of this year. This brings the total cost of the series to a whopping $705.5 million, making it the biggest financial investment Disney has made into a Star Wars project to date. Online, most fans appear to agree that it was worth it; however, there’s no guarantee Disney will spare the same budget for future Star Wars projects.
Apart from Andor, the costliest recent Star Wars show was The Acolyte, which was cancelled after one season. The Acolyte had a gross cost of $230.8 million and a net cost of $187 million after tax credit. The Acolyte and Andor’s first and second seasons were filmed in the UK, which allows for a cash reimbursement of up to 25.5% of the money spent on production there. After the reimbursement, Andor's total cost was reduced to $552.4 million for the entire series. This may encourage Disney to continue filming in the UK, but U.S. President Donald Trump’s call to impose 100% tariffs on movies made outside the country may force them to reconsider. At the moment, there’s no confirmation regarding the production costs of Star Wars’ next theatrical release, The Mandalorian and Grogu; however, each season of The Mandalorian reportedly cost $120 million to make. Disney did not explain the additional $60.5 million costs for Andor before the premiere of Season 2. However, it might have been due to the show’s promotional push, which included the Andor Emmy Awards campaign, and continued for weeks after the season concluded. Andor is streaming on Disney+.
