Ever since Disney announced The Mandalorian and Grogu, questions have been swirling regarding the future of The Mandalorian on Disney+. Before the film was announced, Jon Favreau revealed that he had completed the scripts for The Mandalorian Season 4, and a few sources suggested that Season 4 would begin filming in February of 2024. Favreau admitted that he could see the show going at least 5 seasons and that Season 3 was only “a middle chapter” of what would likely be a much larger journey. However, once the movie was announced, several insiders claimed it was a condensed version of Season 4. This left fans disappointed and questioning how a story that needed to be told in 8 episodes would be condensed to fit the time limitations of a feature film. In his latest interview with Empire, Favreau sets the record straight on whether The Mandalorian Season 4 exists or is just a myth, and if the movie is an attempt to turn a season of television into a 2-hour-long Star Wars movie.

Favreau makes it clear that “It’s structured around a movie structure, as opposed to a serialized weekly television show. So there’s a larger throw to the whole thing.” Instead of following Din Djarin and Grogu on various adventures, from planet to planet, The Mandalorian and Grogu is a single, cohesive adventure. He also reveals that there were always plans for a fourth season, and he still has the script for it. “We were planning on doing a fourth season. I had actually written all of that. I still have Season 4 sitting on my desk here”, Favreau confirms. This is positive news for fans who are hoping the movie isn’t the end of The Mandalorian on Disney+.

Season 4 hasn’t been scrapped altogether, and perhaps, at some point, Favreau will get a chance to shoot the show’s fourth season the way he intended. The Mandalorian Season 3 was never announced as the final chapter in the series, and even if it wasn’t as well-received as the show’s first two seasons, the viewership remained consistently high, and it has more than earned at least one more season on Disney+. At the moment, the only live-action series in production is Ahsoka Season 2, and perhaps it would be a good idea for Disney to give Favreau the go-ahead to resume work on Season 4 of Mando. This would give fans something to look forward to after The Mandalorian and Grogu and Ahsoka Season 2. The Mandalorian and Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
