In the early/mid-2010s, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick had it all. Fame, money, success, and a Super Bowl appearance. His future looked bright in the NFL. Then came 2016, and it all fell apart. Statistically, it wasn’t an amazing year for him in general. While he limited turnovers and extended plays with his legs, other stats such as yards per attempt, completion percentage, and yards per game were among the worst in the league. To top it off, he infamously knelt during the National Anthem to protest police brutality and racial injustice. Just like that, he never played another down in the NFL after that season.

Since then, his main focus has been his endorsement deals, mainly with Nike, and political activism. He released a pseudo-documentary with Netflix in 2021 where he infamously compared the NFL combine to the auction block during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Recently, he partnered with Oscar-winning filmmaker Spike Lee to produce another documentary for ESPN about his time on the 49ers. However, it was not meant to be.

Lee has confirmed that the project is dead in the water, citing “creative differences” but also elaborating that he can’t say much more because of an NDA. So far, there are no plans to have it picked up by another company, so if Kaepernick wants to get it made, he’ll have to do it himself. He has as much chance of getting back into the NFL as I do of being signed as the starting quarterback for the Ravens, but he’ll certainly not give up any chance to be in the spotlight.
