HBO's The Last of Us set the bar on how to successfully turn a video game into a great TV show, but Amazon has its own hot iron in the fire with Fallout.
Ahead of the premiere of season two in December, the show has already been renewed for a third season.
“We are absolutely thrilled that our global Prime Video customers will be able to delve deeper into the wonderfully surreal and captivating world of ‘Fallout,’” said Vernon Sanders, global head of television for Amazon MGM Studios.
The show was written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner and produced by Kilter Films, with executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. Robertson-Dworet and Wagner also serve as executive producers, creators, and showrunners.
“Jonah, Lisa, Geneva, and Graham have done an exceptional job bringing this beloved video game franchise to vivid life on Prime Video. Together with our amazing partners at Bethesda Games and Bethesda Softworks, we are delighted to announce a third season of ‘Fallout,’ well ahead of the much-anticipated debut of Season Two,” continues Sanders.

Unlike The Last of Us, Fallout is no direct conversion of one of the popular video games, but an original story set in the Fallout universe. It follows Lucy MacLean, a young woman played by Ella Purnell, who lives with her family and a lot of others in an underground vault after the Earth has been turned into a nuclear wasteland. When raiders attack her vault and kidnap her father, Hank, played by Kyle MacLachlan, she leaves her shelter to find him. On her journey, she comes in contact with the Ghoul, a disfigured bounty hunter played by Walton Goggins, Maximus, a young man wearing (and struggling with) massive body armor, various other strange and weird survivors of the nuclear apocalypse, as well as dangerous beasts and monsters.
Season one ended with a cliffhanger when the main characters learn that things are not as they seem, and they head out into the wastelands again to get some answers.
Season one of Fallout has had more than 100 million viewers to date, putting the show in the top three Amazon Prime Video titles ever.
Season two will pick up right after the finale of season one and show the journey of Lucy, Ghoul, and Maximus through the wastelands of the Mojave Desert to the mysterious city of New Vegas.
