Filmmaker Quintin Tarantino’s seemingly unprovoked comments about actor Paul Dano have been met with a strong reaction. Everyone from the actor’s fans to the writer for The Batman: Part II has responded to Tarantino’s harsh criticism of Dano’s performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood. Tarantino opened up on a host of subjects, and Dano came under his radar during an appearance on “The Bret Easton Ellis” podcast. He ranked There Will Be Blood at number 5 on his personal list of the top 20 films of the 21st century. Everything was fine until Tarantino opened up on his thoughts regarding Dano’s performance in the film, which he deemed the only reason why he didn’t rank the movie much higher on the list.

Tarantino believes Dano was the weak link in a great film and called him “The weakest f–king actor in SAG.” Elaborating further, Tarantino called Dano “weak sauce” and said, “He is the weak sister. Austin Butler would have been wonderful in that role. He’s just such a weak, weak, uninteresting guy.” It’s unclear if the filmmaker expected such a strong pushback for his comments, but he managed to unite the online community in favor of Dano. One user called out Tarantino and said, “No director should ever say anything like this about an actor. Quite vile really.” Others were just as bewildered as they were outraged by the unjustified criticism. Dano has clearly won a lot of respect for his various performances, and in addition to his acting talents, he is already a celebrated writer and director. The actor had only a few days to prepare for his roles as Eli and Paul Sunday in There Will Be Blood, with Eli being the more challenging part to portray. He admitted, “On 'There Will Be Blood' I was cast at the last minute. I had 3 1/2 to 4 days to get ready for the first day. I just went for it, threw myself in there, and gave it everything I had. That was just guts and instinct, not a lot of preparation.”

Other than Quintin Tarantino, it seems everyone enjoyed Dano’s performance in the film. He played the part of ‘The Riddler’ in the Robert Pattinson starrer The Batman. Matt Tomlin, the co-writer for The Batman Part II, along with Matt Reeves, also defended Dano, admitting that “I am really pleased to see so many people cheer on Paul Dano this week. Not only is he a terrific actor, but he’s an astonishing director who exudes control and tremendous empathy”. Tomlin shared his opinion on X/Twitter, which has been flooded with passionate rebuttals to Tarantino’s comments. Although there’s no clue whether Paul Dano has been checking out the reactions to Tarantino’s remarks, he’d undoubtedly feel blessed to know he has a loyal group of fans who have his back. It proves that, no matter how great a filmmaker or personality is, the online community spares no one.
