Felicity Jones’ latest film, opposite fellow Star Wars alum, Joel Edgerton, is earning rave reviews. Train Dreams is based on Denis Johnson’s beloved novella about a railroad worker, played by Edgerton, and his wife, played by Felicity Jones. A film chronicling the life of an American couple who live in the forests of the Pacific Northwest is just one of many versatile roles Jones has portrayed recently. Although she hasn’t appeared in too many recent projects, the ones she has starred in have received critical acclaim, including The Brutalist, which earned her a second Academy Award nomination. Jones shared her love of cinema and acting in a new interview with the Financial Times. She revealed what she looks for in a role and whether she sees the future of the entertainment industry amid the rapid spread of AI.
The actress has faith that humans will survive Artificial Intelligence, and actors won’t be replaced by it. She says, “I feel like there was 3D and that didn’t really go very far, with the 3D glasses, you know. There’s been virtual reality.” Jones thinks AI will find a place, but it won’t do away with the art forms we hold dear because, “I trust that in the end, humans like watching humans.”She agrees that “Theatre just gets stronger and stronger!” Jones is an optimistic, positive person by nature, but she likes to find roles that help her escape reality. She lives a normal life with her husband, director Charles Guard, and their two kids, and even though she enjoys her private life, she says acting provides her with a break as “you enjoy the escape in some ways. There’s a lovely freedom in just being someone else.”

Jones loves working in the outdoors, something she gets to do a lot in Train Dreams, and one of the reasons why she loved portraying Jyn Erso in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. She admits that one of the attractions of portraying Jyn Erso was that Rogue One was shot on location, which allowed her to train in martial arts. Jones put in the rigorous hours to make Jyn the badass she is, and for her role as Gladys Grainer in Train Dreams, she reveals, “I actually skinned a goat in preparation for this role. There was a moment when I was skinning that goat on a farm and I thought ‘well, goodness, what an unusual profession this is!’” She says she enjoys trying quirky ways to get into character, including skinning a goat, and “using wigs and changing my physical appearance.” The actress believes that the demand for inspiring and distinctive cinema is at an all-time high. She says, “I think people are desperate to understand what’s going on” in the world, “and you can sort of feel that the desire for cinema is back.” Train Dreams releases in theaters on November 7 and arrives on Netflix on November 21.
