Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro's adaptation of Mary Shelley’s novel, Frankenstein, just hit theaters. The film has earned appreciation for being a stunning artistic achievement, and del Toro continues to impress as an imaginative filmmaker who truly loves his craft. With the rise of AI, the kind of movies he makes are becoming rarer. In a conversation with NPR, del Toro unflinchingly shared his thoughts on the growing use of AI in filmmaking. The director, who believes in making movies the old-fashioned way, didn’t mince his words when he received an email questioning his stance on AI. He explains, “The other day, somebody wrote me an email, said, ‘What is your stance on AI?’ And my answer was very short. I said, "I'd rather die."
The filmmaker says he will never be interested in using AI, “particularly generative AI,” in any of his work and compares its rise to Victor Frankenstein’s “arrogance”, which led to his downfall. He believes AI developers are just as arrogant as Frankenstein was, and they’re “creating something without considering the consequences, and I think we have to take a pause and consider where we’re going.” Perhaps del Toro can see the creative decline happening due to AI, which is becoming increasingly difficult to tell apart from the real thing. Generative AI videos can be found as easily as regular videos shot by people on their phones, and often, people aren’t able to tell the difference, unless they have a keen observation.

There are fears that AI could put real actors and writers out of work, and it’s up to artists to stand together against it before it puts jobs in the entire entertainment industry in danger. Despite his aversion to AI, del Toro believes “natural stupidity” is a bigger threat than AI technology. The same “natural stupidity” that accounts for “most of the world’s worst features” could lead to a creative disaster due to the over-dependency on AI. For the Crimson Peak and The Shape of Water director, nothing can ever replace the power of human imagination and ideas, not even AI. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, is playing in select theaters. It will premiere on Netflix on November 7.
