James Gunn Talks Harley Quinn's Place In The DCU

With Superman kicking off James Gunn’s DCU, fans have already started speculating about what characters may return. David Corenswet made his debut as Superman, but Wonder Woman and Batman have not been cast yet. Robert Pattinson’s Batman depiction is in another story universe. When asked about Margot Robbie’s potential return as Harley Quinn, Gunn simply stated, “That will be revealed down the line.” However, Gunn did mention another Suicide Squad character he wants to bring back. He explained, “I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out. So we’ll see what happens.”
Gunn’s next project in the DCU is Peacemaker Season 2, which has direct ties to Suicide Squad. The characters are connected by the death of Rick Flag Jr. and his father’s avenging him. So it is probable that they could make an appearance in the TV show, but probably not this season. Peacemaker’s second season premieres on August 21 on HBO Max, so all the filming was completed a while ago. For Robbie’s part, she stated, “It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds... and filming [The Suicide Squad], so I was kind of like, 'Oof, I need a break from Harley because she's exhausting. I don't know when we're next going to see her. I'm just as intrigued as everyone else is.” Given Robbie’s statement, unless Harley has been recast, it’s unlikely she’ll appear in any of the announced projects. She could still make an appearance down the line as the DCU gains momentum.
